(And nope, a fancy logo is not one of them)
Starting a personal brand can feel like trying to make a five-course meal when you’ve only got oats and a spoon.
Google says you need a mission statement, a full visual identity, a perfectly curated feed, email marketing, a niche so specific it sounds made up, and a whole photoshoot by tomorrow.
But here’s the truth: you really don’t need that much to begin.
You need just enough to start showing up and finding your people.
So let’s talk about the actual first five things you need to launch your personal brand - especially if you’re building something solo, gentle, and honest.
1. Clarity on what you want to talk about (even if it’s not fully figured out)
You don’t need a 30-page business plan.
But it helps to know:
→ What are you drawn to?
→ What could you talk about forever, even if no one paid you (yet)?
→ What are you slowly becoming known for?
Even a fuzzy idea is enough. You’re allowed to evolve - your brand can grow with you.
2. A soft but steady online home
Pick one place to show up - that’s it.
Instagram, a newsletter, a blog, TikTok - whatever feels less scary or kinda fun right now. Forget being everywhere. That’s not sustainable (unless you have 3 clones). Just one place, with your voice and a simple presence.
3. A basic brand vibe (no, you don’t need a full brand book)
No need for a $2,000 branding package.
You can start with:
→ A couple of colors you like
→ 1–2 fonts
→ A few Canva templates that don’t stress you out
The key is consistency - not perfection. If it feels like you, that’s good branding.
4. A simple offer (or a tiny freebie - if that fits)
This is where you gently invite people into your world. And no, it doesn’t have to be perfect, polished, or even big. What matters is: you're starting to show what you do and how you can help.
Depending on your thing, this could look like:
→ A small digital product (like a guide, template, or planner)
→ A service you’re offering (coaching, design, VA work, voiceovers — anything!)
→ A physical product you make or curate
→ A mini freebie to give a little value & start a connection (a checklist, one-pager, Notion planner…)
→ A “soft launch” offer: just telling people what you’re working on and how they can join or support
Not every business needs a freebie to begin, especially if you’re working with physical goods or done-for-you services. But it can help build trust and give people a taste of what it’s like to work with you.
So ask yourself:
➡️ What’s the smallest version of what I offer that I could share now?
Even one simple link, or a “DM me if you’re curious,” is more than enough to begin.
5. The guts to start (even while figuring things out)
This one's the toughest.
You’ll never feel 100% ready. There will always be another thing to tweak, fix, learn.
But starting with what you have - messy, unsure, heart pounding - is how clarity comes.
Not before, during.
Final reminder (with love):
You don’t need to become a “brand” overnight.
You’re not a company. You’re a person building something meaningful.
Start small. Start soft. Start where you are.
